Hey this blog is great. I’m looking forward to reading more.
Was there any kind of community effort that called for volunteers to help dig out sidewalks, fire hydrants, or anyone that needed it? If not why not?
I don’t think it would matter if they made it a snow emergency route because Alexandria is too scared of voter’s wrath to tow them. Prince Street is a snow emergency route and it barely has one lane open on the 16th.
In a unrelated comment, HSBC is closing their branch in Carlyle today (the 16th).
The city issued emergency warnings that included this: “Residents can help out by continuing to clear snow around fire hydrants and storm drains, and from sidewalks.” I cleared a couple corners near us with my trusty HD shovel. No biggie. Walking over those ice patches was tricky. Plus, it was Valentine’s Day. How is a girl supposed to get to the Carlyle Club in high heels?
Very good and news to me, I missed that call but I did help a friend in Old Town who was with a group (Snow Buddies?) digging out senior citizens and fire hydrants. I tought that idea would really work in the Carlyle area since the majority of residents didn’t have to dig out.
Also news to me, women (or men for that matter) actually go to the Carlyle Club!
Sam – Snow Buddies sounds like a great idea. I’ll spread the word. Information about this volunteer program is listed on the City’s Snow and Ice Control Web page: http://alexandriava.gov/Snow#citzasst
Ah, the Carlyle Club… Such a unique venue and so close by! It is really worth a visit. There is often live entertainment with no cover charge. Their shows are first class and the dance floor is wonderful. Last summer, the club hosted Happy Hour on Wednesdays for local neighborhood groups. I’d hate for them to leave. They are the life of our community!
Carl – Today (21st), HSBC looks fully operational (still lots of stuff on desks); would be sad to see a business leave. I also noted during a walk around that there is an ABC permit application for Fosters Grill at 2004 Eisenhower (across from the PTO parking garage). That is fantastic to have a place like that coming to Carlyle, especially at our end. Construction buildout inside just beginning, so it may be months, but progress for Spring!
Kas –
Foster’s was approved middle of last year. It is good to see some sort of life there. Did you see if there was any actual construction going on?
The DC Boat House, which was supposed to go in next to Potbelly on Jamieson but fell through as they couldn’t get an ABC license so I am wondering if Fosters is going through same. Will try and contact the owners.
Christine on another post mentioned that the 7-11 shoiuld be open within 5 weeks. They have to also get an ABC license to seel beer & wine.
Why in the world did the city deny the DC Boat House a liquor license? Can’t the city use the revenue that a new business will bring in?! I just don’t get it.
Christine –
Not sure what the process is with getting an ABC license. I checked my former notes on that space and will call the City to see if the planner can let me know what exactly happened.
