If you’re like me, and not like our Representative James Moran, who relishes the idea that the detainees could and should be moved to Alexandria (specifically Carlyle), you are very concerned for security reasons whether or not they will be tried at the Courthouse in Carlyle. Well, recently, we’ve gotten some very interesting news concerning this in the last couple of days. Some of this is very surprising.
Senator Jim Webb – a military man turned politician whose opposition to the Iraq War stymied the Bush Administration – showed that this guy’s got guts when he blasted President Barack Obama, the head of his own party, and his plan to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. The Virginia Senator told George Stephanopolous on Sunday’s ABCs ‘This Week’ that none of the delegates should be brought to the U.S. and said the President should abandon his current timeline to close the prison by January 2010. Senator Webb said the current facility was ‘appropriate’ for the task of trying these people. Here’s what he said:
WEBB: No, I don’t believe it. We’ve spent hundreds of millions of dollars building an appropriate facility with all security precautions in Guantanamo to try these cases. There are cases against international law. These aren’t people who were in the United States committing a crime in the United States. These are people who were brought to Guantanamo for international terrorism. I do not believe they should be tried in the United States.

Now yesterday, Democrats in the Senate decided to NOT provide funds to close the Guantanamo Bay prison until the administration comes up with a satisfactory plan for transferring the detainees held there. So it looks like the Carlyle neighborhood is off the hook for this for now.
Hello, I just wanted to thank you for your blog updates. I have it added to my Google Reader and really enjoy hearing what’s going on in our neighborhood. I have lived at the Meridian at Eisenhower for just about 1 year and have been documenting the amazing sunsets outside of my window along the way. Just thought you may be interested. Thanks again, Holly
